World's First Surgical Procedure Taught Entirely through Remote Presence |
|
On September 20th, two Argentine surgeons conducted the world's first surgical procedure taught entirely through remote training via the RP-7® Robot. Dr. Alex Gandsas, head of bariatric and minimally invasive surgery at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland enabled surgeons in Argentina to learn the techniques necessary to perform a laparoscopic gastric sleeve procedure for the treatment of morbid obesity.
From 5,400 miles away, Dr. Gandsas led a three month surgical training program using an RP-7 to educate Drs. Sergio Cantarelli and Gabriel Egidi located in Bahia Blanca, Argentina. The doctors learned the procedure by remotely participating in surgeries. By the end of September, Cantarelli and Egidi were confident in their skills and successfully performed their first complex gastric sleeve surgery on a 39 year-old woman with Dr. Gandsas remotely present in the operating room via the RP-7. "...With the power of the Internet and the RP-7 robot, I was able to teach and coach these doctors through a very difficult surgery that will change a patient's life forever," said Gandsas. "Robotic remote presence is a cost effective technology that allows surgeons to have access to specialists regardless their location in the planet. In addition it adds safety through out the full length of the procedure." Remote Presence telementoring can be used by experts in the field to cost-effectively train physicians and medical teams on any clinical procedures and best practices.
