Remote Presence robots will give doctors at St. Joseph Health System, part of Catholic Health Initiatives, an extra set of eyes and ears to assist in the patient care at several Kentucky hospitals.
Initially, Dr. Joshua Steiner, a general surgeon in Lexington, KY thought that using a robot to consult with patients and medical staff sounded "pretty ridiculous." Then Dr. Alex Gandsas of Maryland, a colleague of Dr. Steiner's, explained how he uses the robot and the value he finds in the technology. "The more I thought about it, the more appealing it became," Dr. Steiner said. Now he likes the idea of being able to "visit" his post-surgical patients after hours from his home by driving the robot around the hospital. "I like to see every one of my patients at least once a day," Steiner said. "Being able to use this system to actually see how the patient looks and see what is going on from home would be really helpful. It will let me sleep better." |
