Study Finds the RP-7 Robot a Valuable Tool for Surgical Mentoring and Training

Doctors evaluated in a study (Surgical Innovation, September 2007) the effectiveness of experts teaching surgical procedures on site versus remotely through an RP-7 robot.

The study, Telementoring for Minimally Invasive Surgical Training by Wireless Robot, states that remote mentoring (allowing an offsite expert to log onto the robot and assist remotely) might be useful in situations such as the following:

  • limited number of local experts
  • unavailability of external experts
  • need for prompt and updated teaching of specific surgical procedures
  • remote assistance for distant training centers
  • collaborative efforts among remote and local experts

Participants found that robot mentoring was well received and appreciated. Evaluation by questionnaire found no statistical difference was detected in comparing active, passive or remote mentoring sessions. The authors also state that robotic-assisted telementoring may enhance educational opportunities
