INTOUCH HEALTH REMOTE PRESENCE ROBOT USED BETWEEN TEXAS
AND CALIFORNIA TO EXPAND CLINICAL PROGRAM FOR ELDER CARE
Silverado Senior Living introduces InTouch Health 'Companion' at Houston specialty Alzheimer's community
with state-to-state communication between caregivers and healthcare experts located 1500 miles away

Santa Barbara, CA & Houston, TX, October 28, 2003 - InTouch Health, Inc., the leader in remote presence technology for healthcare providers, and Silverado Senior Living, Inc., the leading specialty Alzheimer's/Dementia care provider, announced today the introduction of the InTouch Health "Companion" mobile robot system at a Silverado long term care community in Houston. When used in a long term care community, the Companion enables remote healthcare experts to "virtually" consult with caregivers, residents, and family members at the point of care, whenever they're needed - providing immediate and frequent access to critical expertise in long term care. With the Companion, an expert can move, see, hear and talk in another location as though they are actually there.

The Companion, developed by InTouch Health, is in use in Silverado Senior Living's Cypresswood location, a specialty Alzheimer's/Dementia community in Houston, Texas. Silverado's corporate healthcare experts, based approximately 1500 miles away in San Juan Capistrano, California, have already been using the Companion to provide and support remote training, coaching, and quality assurance to Cypresswood, to their Aspen Park, Utah community, and to their Calabasas, California community. Silverado began testing the Companion at Calabasas in January and is the world's first long term care provider to use the new technology.

The Companion instantly brings specialized areas of staff training, coaching, consulting, and monitoring into multiple care facilities, offering improved management of the most challenging care issues for staff, residents and their families. This capability for experts to be virtually present at any facility on a moment's notice re-shapes the economics and potential for quality of care. The Companion serves to multiply the presence of experts while simultaneously lowering healthcare costs.

Yulun Wang, Ph.D., chairman and CEO of InTouch Health said, "We are pleased that Silverado Senior Living is continuing to deploy additional Companion robots into their senior care communities to improve the reach of their experts while reducing their costs." Wang continued, "The continuing expansion of Silverado's programs using the Companion demonstrates the organization's leadership approach and commitment to innovating new solutions to address the industry's critical caregiver support and training issues."

Loren B. Shook, president & CEO of Silverado Senior Living said, "With our Cypresswood installation, Silverado is now using the InTouch Health Companion in all three states where we currently operate. Increasing the reach of our Companion network is a great step forward in our application of innovative technology to provide the highest standard of care to our residents and further improve our best of class training program for our frontline long term care team."

Stephen F. Winner, vice president and Chief of Culture for Silverado Senior Living, and a nationally recognized authority in long term Alzheimer's care services added, "The expansion of the Companion to Cypresswood is providing us with even more opportunities to support both care and training. We have gone from initially using the Companion for clinical case assessment to expanding its role in improving our training programs. Not only does the Companion already show great benefits for daily interaction with our communities, but it is also providing a platform to develop and deliver a new form of training that can be conducted over hours and days instead of weeks and months."

The Crisis in Senior Healthcare Support
There is a demographic crisis in healthcare. Over the next 10 years the number of elderly age 85 and over will grow 38%. The number of seniors requiring healthcare support will double. According to a May 2003 Department of Health and Human Services Report to Congress, the number of people requiring long term care services is expected to grow by more than 200%, from 13 million in 2000 to 27 million in 2050. In 2000 there were 77 persons in the workforce for every long term care job. This ratio will decrease in 2010 to 60 persons, and in 2050 to between 14 and 34 persons, per long term care job. Already today there are over 400,000 unfilled nursing positions causing healthcare providers across the country to close wings or risk negative outcomes. Over the coming years, the declining ratio of working age adults to elderly will further exacerbate the shortage. Recommendations in the DHHS Report include the use of technology to improve recruiting, education and training, record keeping and patient care.
